Mismaloya vs. Las Ánimas: Choosing a Secluded Cove for Your Proposal
South of the city, the jungle meets the water. How Mismaloya and Las Ánimas work for a proposal, and how to choose between them.

South of Puerto Vallarta, the coast changes. The city ends, the jungle comes down to the water, and the beaches turn into coves. Mismaloya and Las Ánimas are the two names that come up most when couples look for a secluded proposal spot near the city, and both deliver something the town beaches cannot: the feeling of being far away, minutes from home base.
Here is how each one works for a proposal, and how to choose between them.
Mismaloya: the cove with the famous view
Mismaloya is a small bay about twenty minutes south of downtown, where the jungle meets a curved beach and the rock formations of Los Arcos rise out of the water just offshore. The view from the beach and from the lookout points along the highway is one of the most recognized in the region.
For a proposal, Mismaloya offers two settings:
- The beach itself, with palapa restaurants, calm water and a view of Los Arcos. Sunset here is direct and dramatic.
- The viewpoints above the bay, along the coastal road, where the whole cove fits into one frame. These work well for couples who want the landscape to be the whole decoration.
Good to know: Mismaloya is easy to reach by car, taxi or arranged transport, which makes logistics like decor, flowers and a photographer much simpler than at beaches without road access.
Las Ánimas: the beach with no road
Further south, past Boca de Tomatlán, Las Ánimas is a beach you cannot drive to. You arrive by water taxi from Boca de Tomatlán or by a coastal hiking trail that passes through smaller coves on the way. That effort is exactly what keeps it quiet.
The beach is a long stretch of sand lined with palapa restaurants, with jungle behind and calm water in front. It feels like a different world, yet you can be back in Puerto Vallarta for dinner.
Good to know: water taxis stop running in the late afternoon, so a sunset proposal here needs the return plan arranged in advance. This is the single most important logistical detail for Las Ánimas.
How to choose between them
Choose Mismaloya if you want the iconic view of Los Arcos, easier logistics, and the option of a viewpoint proposal with zero hiking.
Choose Las Ánimas if privacy matters most, you enjoy a bit of adventure, and the idea of a beach with no road feels like the two of you.
Both work year-round, but the dry season, November through May, gives the calmest water and the clearest sunsets.
Keeping the surprise in a remote spot
A secluded beach raises the stakes on coordination, because there is no "ducking into a shop" to fix a problem. The details that matter most:
- A believable reason to go. A recommended restaurant, a "hidden beach" a friend told you about, or a day trip framed as exploring the south coast.
- The photographer's cover story. On a quiet beach, a stranger with a camera stands out. The usual solutions: a photographer posing as a tourist, or a pre-arranged "couple's session" that one partner believes is the whole plan.
- Timing the light. In coves, the surrounding hills can cut the sunlight earlier than expected. The golden hour arrives sooner than the official sunset time, so the plan should be built around the real light, not the clock.
What a setup can look like
On these beaches, the setting is the decoration. The setups that work best:
- A low table for two at the water's edge with candles and flowers, for a proposal that turns into a private dinner.
- A path of petals from the restaurant to a decorated spot on the sand.
- A simple floral arch framed against Los Arcos or the open bay.
Wind and tide decide what is possible on a given day, which is why setups here are designed the same week, with a Plan B spot a few meters away.
Practical details
- Mismaloya: about 20 minutes south of downtown by road; public beach with restaurants; easy load-in for decor.
- Las Ánimas: no road access; water taxi from Boca de Tomatlán or coastal trail; last return boats leave in the late afternoon.
- Best months: November through May.
- Privacy: Mismaloya is moderate, Las Ánimas is high on weekdays.
Planning it with help
Remote beaches are where planning pays off the most: transport, tide, light, the return trip, the photographer's story and the dinner after the yes all have to line up. That coordination is exactly what we do.
