The Best Time to Propose in Puerto Vallarta (A Local's Honest Guide)

You've chosen Puerto Vallarta. Now comes a question that matters more than most people realize: when? The month you pick shapes almost everything about how your proposal feels and looks, the weather, the light, the crowds, even the price. And because you're likely traveling from somewhere else, you can't just wait for a nice day. You have to choose your dates in advance and hope they cooperate.

So here's the honest, lived-in guide from someone who plans proposals here through every season. No tourism-board gloss, just what you actually need to know.

The short answer: November through May

If you want the safest bet for an outdoor proposal, the dry season, roughly November through May, is when Puerto Vallarta is at its most reliable. Warm days, cool evenings, low humidity, and, crucially, very little rain. The skies are clear, the sunsets are clean and golden, and you can plan a beach or rooftop moment without the weather holding a knife over it.

This is peak season for a reason. If your priority is the highest chance of a flawless outdoor moment, book somewhere in this window and you're giving yourself the best odds.

Month by month, honestly

November to December is gorgeous. The rainy season has just ended, the landscape is still green and lush, and the weather is close to perfect. The holidays bring a romantic energy but also more visitors, so popular spots book up.

January to March is the sweet spot for many couples. Reliably dry, comfortable temperatures, spectacular light. This is prime engagement season, and the bay is at its most photogenic. It's also busy and prices are at their highest, so plan early.

April to May stays dry and beautiful, with warmth building toward summer. Slightly fewer crowds than the winter peak, still excellent conditions. A quietly excellent time to propose.

June through October is the rainy season, and here's where I'll be straight with you. The rain is often dramatic and beautiful, warm afternoon and evening storms that frequently pass quickly. The landscape turns impossibly green, and there are fewer tourists and lower prices. But for an outdoor proposal, "usually passes quickly" is not a guarantee you want to bet the moment on. September is typically the wettest and carries the highest chance of disruption.

If your only option is the rainy season

Life doesn't always let you choose your travel dates. If your trip falls in the rainy months, you can still have a beautiful proposal, you just have to plan smarter. That means being honest about the risk, choosing a setting with more cover or an indoor-outdoor option, timing the moment for the drier part of the day (mornings are often clearer than late afternoons), and building flexibility into the plan.

Think about the light, not just the month

Whatever season you choose, the single most important daily detail is the light. Golden hour, the hour before sunset, is when the most beautiful proposal photos happen anywhere, and Puerto Vallarta's west-facing bay makes it spectacular. The sun sets directly over the water.

Sunset times shift through the year, earlier in winter, later in summer, so the right hour for your moment depends on your date. This is something a planner maps out for you, but even planning solo, find out exactly when the sun sets on your day and build everything around it.

The other kind of timing: how far ahead to plan

Season aside, there's a second timing question people forget: how far in advance to book. The best settings, photographers, and dates get claimed early, especially in peak season. If you're proposing between December and March, the sooner you plan, the more options you'll have. A few months ahead is comfortable. A few weeks ahead and you're working with whatever is left.

So when should you propose?

If you have full freedom, aim for November through May, and within that, January through March for the most reliable conditions and the most spectacular light. If your dates are fixed, don't panic, a good plan can work in almost any season, as long as you're honest about the risks and build around them.
